When I picked up my camera that morning in Santa Barbara, I wasn’t planning to do a portrait session. I was just wandering. My boyfriend’s mom had a hair appointment nearby, so I found myself with a free hour and decided to check out the farmers market down the street. As always, I was drawn in by the color and texture - fresh fruit, woven baskets, hands exchanging flowers and stories. I took a few documentary-style shots, just for fun, letting myself sink into the rhythm of life in a beach town.
On the walk back, I made a quick detour to the Santa Barbara Courthouse. If you’ve ever been, you know it’s the kind of place that makes you want to slow down. The arches, the light, the quiet elegance - it’s a dream spot for portraits, and I’ve always loved photographing there when I get the chance.
That’s when I saw her.
A girl in a flowing gown, standing confidently beneath the archways while two women - her mom and older sister, as I soon learned - snapped iPhone pictures of her with so much care and pride. I don’t know what came over me exactly, but something about the moment tugged at me. Maybe it was the beauty of it, or maybe just the reminder of why I love this work in the first place.
Here’s the thing: I’m not the kind of person who would normally walk up to strangers. But something about holding a camera gives me this small superpower. It makes me feel bold in the best way. So I smiled and asked if they’d like me to take a few.
They said yes, so warmly. Her name was Briana, and she had just turned fifteen. The three of them had driven up from LA for the day to take quinceañera photos in a place they loved. They didn’t have a photographer booked - just a vision, a dress, and each other. I felt so lucky to be standing there with my camera at just the right time.
I took just a handful of photos, but they’re some of my favorites I’ve ever captured. Briana was so graceful and kind. The light hit just right. Her sister helped fluff the dress, her mom smiled behind me the whole time. There was nothing rushed or posed - just a really lovely, human moment.
Before we parted ways, we hugged. I got their email, sent over the gallery a few days later, and smiled all over again looking through it. It was one of those sweet surprises that reminded me why I always bring my camera, even when I’m not “on the clock.”
Briana, if you’re reading this: you are radiant. Thank you (and your family) for trusting me with this small part of your story.
